Dynasty Warriors 6 jest kolejnym przedstawicielem jednej z najpopularniejszych serii gier akcji, a konkretnie tzw. chodzonych bijatyk, czyli produkcji, w których koncentrujemy się głównie na efektownej eliminacji pojawiających się na ekranie przeciwników. Najnowsza odsłona cyklu nie wprowadza tu żadnych zmian. W dalszym ciągu stajemy więc do walk z przeważającymi siłami wroga, niejednokrotnie obserwując na ekranie setki osób.
Najnowsza odsłona cyklu nie zmienia prezentowanej tematyki. Przenosimy się więc do dawnych Chin i bierzemy więc udział w wydarzeniach z tzw. Epoki Trzech Królestw. Podobnie jak wcześniej, wszystkie ważniejsze wydarzenia ukazywane są na profesjonalnie zrealizowanych filmach przerywnikowych. W trakcie zabawy przejmujemy kontrolę nad jednym z kilkudziesięciu różnych wojowników. Jedną z najbardziej widocznych zmian zawartych w szóstej części serii jest zupełnie nowy system o nazwie renbu, odpowiedzialny za przeprowadzanie coraz bardziej złożonych combosów. Podstawową jego zaletą jest możliwość kumulowania praktycznie niezliczonej ilości uderzeń. Jest to uzależnione wyłącznie od obecności przeciwników, z czym nie powinno być żadnego problemu. Oczywiście zawarcie tego systemu przełożyło się także na zwiększenie atrakcyjności rozgrywki. Przeciwników można bowiem likwidować praktycznie bez większych przestojów.
W trakcie rozgrywki pojawiają się też mniej lub bardziej złożone zadania, którym należy sprostać. Wiele z tych misji może wpłynąć na dalszy rozwój sytuacji na polu bitwy. Przykładowo, zniszczenie prowadzącej do zamku wroga bramy pozwoli sojuszniczym oddziałom na szybsze zajęcie wybranej partii mapy. Wszystko to ma służyć zwiększeniu znaczenia innych jednostek znajdujących się na polu bitwy. Sterowana postać oprócz wyprowadzania ciosów potrafi też wykonywać wiele innych akcji. Mowa tu zarówno o standardowych czynnościach, jak wspinaniu się na wyżej położone platformy czy pływaniu, jak i ciekawszych manewrach, umożliwiających na przykład efektowne przeskakiwanie pomiędzy znajdującymi się na morzu statkami.
Bardzo duży nacisk położono na poprawienie animacji, ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem głównej postaci. Wykonywane ruchy ukazywane są w bardzo szczegółowy sposób. Nie zabrakło także efektownych akrobacji, dzięki którym można ponadto pozbyć się większych grup przeciwników. Sterowany bohater używa oczywiście wielu rodzajów broni. Oprócz standardowych katan mogą to być na przykład zdecydowanie większe włócznie, na które można nabijać wybranych przeciwników. Całość rozgrywana jest na trójwymiarowych mapach, nieco większych od tych z piątej części serii.
